When you collaborate, you would either invite cooperation or spur competition. Thank God that tunesmith genius DJ Khaled’s effort to bring forth the heavyweights of this generation is landing squarely on the former without stepping on each other’s toes.
“I’m the One” is a fat-free joint effort that casually blends the bounding force of the “Major Key” hitmaker into a bouyant and flowing track that relies on tenderly melodic and soothing hooks from Justin Bieber (who sports a nice crown BTW) musing over a girl of his dreams. Quavo, on the other hand, cuts with his slick middle 8 in the tradition of his assist in Calvin Harris’s hit “Slide” as 1/3 of Migos. What is more surprising is how Lil Wayne and Chance the Rapper were able to traffic in their twangy approach outside the comfort of their usual comp of cuts with their free-flowing assist and tale-spinning to this surefire summery jam hitmaker.
“I’m the One” is another display of DJ Khaled’s penchant for collab and distinctive brand to “celebrate life, success, and (their) blessing” with a heartwarming cameo from his son Asahd listed as executive producer. The track is a foretaste of his upcoming album, “Grateful”.
